Take the utmost care and kindness in all things.

I’d decided to take this to heart and practice it. The first challenge I encountered was remembering that I’d decided to practice. So I used the tried and true (tied and true?) technique of tying a string around my finger. That helped a lot.

When I do remember to take the utmost care and kindness in all things, the results are instantaneous and remarkable. Time slows down, and my participation in whatever I’m doing, whether it be reading a book or carrying a canoe on my shoulders, deepens. At the same time, my awareness of myself doing that thing is heightened. It’s as though I experience my life in a new and clarifying light.

It’s been hot and humid here, and I’ve been crabby. But when I remember that I am taking the utmost care and kindness in all things, presto, my crabbiness is gone. I smile. My posture changes, and my breathing deepens.

It really is quite remarkable.
